Erected on Mt. Hamilton in 1888, the observatory was the gift of James Lick to the University of California. The site at an altitude of 4,209 feet, comprises 3,120 acres, is 26 miles from San Jose. The marvelous view form Mt. Hamilton over Santa Clara Valley, and the 36 inch and 12 inch equatorial telescopes attract thousands of visitors each year to the summit.
